Flashings provide a seal for that movement. After exposure to sunlight and rain or snow fall, tar or chalks' chemical structure breaks down causing leaks and corrosion. Also the shifting of the roof will break the brittle tar or chalk leaving holes and cracks for water to seap through. Only a proper flashing system can prevent this.

8 Roofs done well....highly recommended. Knowledge and years in business unparalleled! Reputation has earned my trust! I have used Bob for roofing needs over past 11 years. He does an excellent job. He has done 8 roofs for me in Elgin, IL from 2005 through 2015. Only one roof (10 years later, 2016) needed some repairs which was due to raccoons and not workmanship.

I contacted Bob for an estimate on my roof. He came highly recommended by the people at Menards on Randall Rd in Carpentersville IL. He is one of the most friendliest people I have ever met. He took lots of pictures of my roof before, during and after his work. I had to leave town the day after he removed the old roof. I returned several days later and was thoroughly delighted by the job.
